Nouvelle-Aquitaine HUB

BioINSouth fosters the participation of France with the region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. It is the largest French region for agriculture and wood, and has a coastline of almost 1,000 km. In 2019, it launched Néo Terra, a roadmap for energy and ecological transition by 2030. This action was reviewed in 2023, now focusing on six ambitions including: i) preservation of natural resources, ii) circularity of the economy, iii) agro-ecology. The region has three major biomass sources: forestry, agriculture and ocean, as well co-products derived from the processing of these primary products. The region’s bioeconomy is advanced in each of these three areas, with some interesting success stories such as the biorefinery of the Rayonier Advanced Materials group, which in 2024 will produce France’s first cellulosic bioethanol, DRT that has been producing bio-based chemical intermediates for over 90 years, and the highly integrated fruit, vegetable and poultry production sectors, with companies valorising biomasses. With its strengths the region aims to be more ambitious in terms of bioeconomy. France and Nouvelle-Aquitaine participates in the BioINSouth consortium with Agri-Sud-Ouest Innovation.
