BioINSouth unites a diverse consortium of partners, each offering specialized expertise and resources to achieve our collective objectives. 

We are proud to collaborate with leading universities, research institutions, industry associations, and innovation hubs from across Southern Europe and beyond. The consortium is committed to developing guidelines, digital tools, and regional hubs that support circular bio-based activities while minimizing environmental impact. 

Our consortium spans several countries, including Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Slovenia, Czech republic, and Turkey. Each partner plays a vital role in driving innovation, enhancing regional competitiveness, and contributing to the EU’s fair and green transition.

PROJECT COORDINATOR

Sustainable Processes and Resources for Innovation and National Growth (SPRING)

SPRING is the Italian Circular Bioeconomy Cluster, formally recognised as a component of the national bioeconomy steering committee, focusing on i) coordinating industrial research policies at local and national levels, ii) linking the measures promoted at central and regional levels, iii) a strategic tool to facilitate the implementation and use of interventions in Southern Italian regions. SPRING is in strict contact with policymakers by participating in the national coordinating group on bioeconomy (Presidency of the Council of Ministers), supporting the revision and implementation of regional smart specialization strategies and the creation of the permanent table of SPRING regions. SPRING encourage the creation of national and international partnerships by organising events (e.g. International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy, the Bioeconomy Day and BioInvestIT). Partner role in BioINSouth SPRING will lead WP1 serving as BioINSouth coordinator, while also actively participating in other WPs (WP2. WP3, WP5, WP6 and WP7). It is also the leader of Task 3.2 and Task 5.3.

University of Naples Federico II (UniNA)

UniNa is the world's oldest public university, ranking in the top 2% of universities worldwide, participating in >100 H2020 projects, owning >600 industrial patents and 81 spin-offs. Leading the National Research Centre for technology in agriculture (Agritech), sponsored by the Next generation EU Fund, it focuses on key enabling technologies for the agri-food sector, e.g. the production of new bio-based products through waste valorisation and recycling. The team involved in BioINSouth has consolidated expertise in bio-economic modelling, geospatial data analysis, and the study of anthropic effects and their dynamics on forestry and agricultural ecosystems, also through activities in Agritech and in the H2020 LandSupport. Partner role in BioINSouth UniNA contributes to all WPs and leads Task 4.3 by setting-up the Methodology to study the scenarios of growth while estimating impacts on food security Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF).

University of Milan Bicocca (UniMIB)

UniMIB is a public academic institution, established in 1998. The Department of Biotechnology and Bioscience (BTBS) is highly interdisciplinary and intersectoral and covers aspects of basic and applied research in the field of Life Sciences and Biotechnology. Research lines are Health, Food, Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biodiversity and Ecosystem. It leads the Spoke N° 5 of the recently developed National Biodiversity Future Centre, sponsored by the Next generation EU Fund. NBFC has two main general objectives: (a) understand and address direct drivers for biodiversity decline at marine, terrestrial and urban level and (b) valorising biodiversity to make it a central element for sustainable development. Partner role in BioINSouth UniMIB leads Task 4.4., which involves the set-up of the Methodology to study the Biodiversity and ecosystems integrity, and has an active participation in several other WPs, such as WP5 and WP6.

Technological Corporation of Andalusia

CTA a multisectoral innovation cluster (covering biotech and agri-food sectors among others) made up of more than 170 companies. For 18 years, CTA has been supporting R&D activities through financing, mentoring and cooperation with main Andalusian stakeholders, emerging as a singular multi-sectorial innovation cluster and bringing together the forces of public administration, companies and academia. CTA participated in more than 40 EU projects, is full member of the BIC (2017), A.SPIRE (2018), ERRIN (2018), fellow entity and co-leader of the industrial symbiosis and bioeconomy working groups in CCRI (2022). CTA owns a public open innovation tool promoting the creation of collaboration opportunities and value chain creation among different stakeholders. Partner role in BioINSouth CTA is the WP2 leader taking over the development of the BioINSouth multi-actor approach framework, and also actively participates in activities in WP3, WP5, and WP6.

Frederick University (FredU)

FredU has a strong background in multidisciplinary research, spanning biotech and agri-food sectors among others and is active various European networks. It supported research and development activities through financing, mentoring, and cooperation with key stakeholders in its region. It participated in over 200 national and EU funded projects. FredU's involvement in industrial symbiosis and bioeconomy working groups further highlights its central role is supporting sustainability and circular economy principles in Cyprus. Partner role in BioINSouth FredU will lead the analysis of the bioeconomy policy landscape in the regions of interest in Task 5.2, as well as Task 6.1. with the co-development of policy recommendations for sustainability and circularity in industrial bio-based systems, It is also involved in several other WPs (WP2, WP3, WP5).

Meat Industry Association of Asturias

ASINCAR is a Spanish Agri-Food Cluster (awarded with the Gold label of the European Cluster Excellence Initiative) formed by ca. 100 industrial members (>95% SMEs) coming from the whole value chain. At regional level, ASINCAR has developed a Bioeconomy regional map in collaboration with regional authorities and provides periodic assistance to evaluate Bioeconomy possibilities in relation to Food chain. It is also a Food Technology Centre, developing R&D activities in this area, including EIP Operational Groups, the valorisation of agri-food residues for use into the Food value chain and the exploration of new bio-based sources for nutrients. Partner role in BioINSouth ASINCAR has an active participation in several WPs, such as WP2, WP3, WP5, and WP6, playing a crucial role in the development and completion of the project.

Portugal’s Biotechnology Industry Organisation (P-BIO)

Founded in 1999, P-BIO is a private non-profit association which brings together more than 40 members from the Biotechnology and Life Sciences sector in Portugal. P-BIO has been playing a key role in the interconnection between biotech startups, bioindustry companies and relevant public authorities and other institutions, seeking not only to give visibility to the sector, but also to develop a favourable environment for the creation and growth of biotechnology start-ups and innovative bioindustries at national level. As a member of EuropaBIO, P-BIO plays a significant role in representing the Portuguese Biotech sector at European level. P-BIO leads WP5, which will validate the methodologies and tools developed in the BioINSouth project and specifically in WP4. P-BIO is also involved in the activities of other WPs (WP2, WP3, and WP6)." Partner role in BioINSouth P-BIO leads WP5, which will validate the methodologies and tools developed in the BioINSouth project and specifically in WP4. P-BIO is also involved in the activities of other WPs (WP2, WP3, and WP6).  

BIO EAST HUB CR (BIO EAST HUB CR)

BIOEAST HUB CZ is the first national bioeconomy BIOEAST HUB established in line with the BIOEAST Initiative Governance paper. The main aim is to support stakeholder engagement and implementation of bioeconomy in the Central and Easter Europe, that is lagging behind in bioeconomy both in policy and governance, technology transfer and also in the development of efficient eco-innovation system. BIOEAST HUB CZ can mobilize national stakeholder and also can utilize the network of research organisations and policymakers, as a macro-regional leader of BIOEAST TWG Fresh Water and Bioeconomy Education. Partner role in BioINSouth BIO EAST HUB CR is the leader of WP3. This WP will advance upon the results and achievements of the WP2 concerning stakeholder engagement. The objectives are: i) to develop guidelines for the BioINSouth HUBs coordinators; ii) to establish BioINSouth HUBs in each Southern region; iii) to support BioINSouth coordinators to develop Action Plans. It also contributes to the activities of WP2 and WP5.

PNO Innovation Greece (PNO)

PNO Greece is part of the PNO Group. PNO is specialised in innovation management, public funding for research and development and exploitation services, both for the private and the public sector Partner role in BioINSouth PNO will lead WP7 bringing to the project its extensive expertise in communication, dissemination and exploitation activities acquired in several EU-funded projects focused on circular and bio-based economy. It will also lead Task 2.3., in which it will perform stakeholders’ analysis to map regional and local stakeholders’ groups and develop a stakeholders’ engagement strategy.

Innovation Engineering (INNEN)

INNEN is a private company focused on the design and development of advanced IT solutions for research, access and management of knowledge within companies, on the web and in structured databases, with particular attention to technological innovation. INNEN continuously invests in research and innovation, in collaboration with industry and academic leaders, to bring innovative IT services and solutions based on cutting-edge technologies to the market Partner role in BioINSouth INNEN developed Wheesbee, the business intelligence platform focused on research and innovation enabling to carry out stakeholder and market analysis. INNEN is the leader of Task 4.6. and its expertise will be used to develop all the digital tool needed in BioINSouth, ie. the toolkit to carry on environmental assessment and the management online platform (taking advantages of the platform developed in other projects).

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA)

NKUA is a research University founded over 185 years ago. The NKUA has attained recognition as an Institution of educational and scientific excellence and as a source of intellectual wealth for Greece. The NKUA is committed to work towards the advancement of critical human capacities, contribute to sustainable development and social cohesion. NKUA has a strong record in national, international and EU research programs. It has established a new research center with 16 institutes. Among them, the Bio3 (Research Institute for Biotechnology-Circular Bioeconomy-Sustainable Development), involved in the current application. Partner role in BioINSouth NKUA leads WP6, providing guidelines to support policymakers to incorporate sustainability and circularity considerations into regional bioeconomy strategies and roadmaps. It also participates in other WPs, such as WP2, WP3, and WP5.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia

ACIS, as Association of Chemical Industries of Slovenia, has strong connections with all relevant bioeconomy stakeholders, including Associations of wood industry, paper and pulp industry, food industry and other, including National authorities. As reported above it has been involved with the BIOAEST initiatives, representing an important asset for the project to establish close collaboration with BIOAEST. Partner role in BioINSouth ACIS will bring to BioINSouth the experience gained in the BIOEAST initiative. It represents a connection for collaboration with BIOEAST. It has an active involvement in several WPs in BioINSouth and is one of the consortiums’ organizations in charge of collecting data at regional HUBs level.

AGRI SUD - OUEST INNOVATION (ASOI)

ASOI is an innovation cluster in the agri-food and bioeconomy sector, located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie region. It gathers 430 members (mainly SMEs, but also large companies, local authorities, research and education organizations, and sectoral associations). ASOI has a 6-axis innovation strategy, 2 of which are directly linked to the project's theme: (i) preserving natural resources and adapting production to climate change, (ii) enhancing the value of resources and by-products as part of a bioeconomy. In its operational deployment plan, it aims to support the development of the local bioeconomy. Partner role in BioINSouth ASOI plays an important role in the activities of WP5, helping to analyze the bioeconomy sector in each BioINSouth regional HUB. It also participates in WP2, WP3, and WP6.

Acondicionamiento Tarrasense Associacion (LEITAT)

LEITAT founded in 1906 has a team of over 500 professionals. LEITAT provides social, industrial, economic and sustainable value, offering comprehensive solutions in multiple sectors: development of new materials, eco-sustainable production, revaluation of waste and use of natural resources, green energy and maximization of energy efficiency. LEITAT is recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and was the 3rd Technology Centre in Spain in terms of volume of H2020 projects over the whole program including BBI-JU, and now it is also participating in many HEU and CBE-JU project. This allow to acquire a lot of experience, datasets and information in performing LCA as well as in the SSbD assessment. Partner role in BioINSouth LEITAT will be responsible for the study and evaluation of the most promising feedstocks for bio-based platforms in southern Europe in conjunction with the bio-based processes developed in all European countries and globally. It will develop a critical and benchmarking analysis, based on a systematic literature search in bibliographic databases and on multiple interviews with different companies in the sector. It serves as the leader of WP4.

Scientific and technological research council of Turkey – Marmara research center (TÜBİTAK MAM)

TÜBİTAK, the Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency Research Group develops knowledge and technology in line with the circular economy aiming to fulfil needs in the fields of resource efficiency, life cycle assessment, and utilization of secondary raw materials, counting on good relations with national and local authorities and SME’s in Turkey. It will represent an interesting opportunity for the exchange of best practices in the bio-based sector (indicators, methodologies, tools and data) outside EU Partner role in BioINSouth TÜBİTAK contributes to WP4 activities and also to WP5, in which it will help validate the developed tools as exchange of best practices.
