Slovenia is considered as one region due to its small size and homogeneous characteristics. It is the third country in the EU for surface covered by forests (5.8%). It is one of the countries with the highest percentage of separately-collected waste. A great share of biological waste is processed by RCERO, one of the most modern plants for treating biologic waste in Europe. The domestic chemical sector is particularly inclined towards the transition to bio-based solutions. The spectrum of the bio-based product is quite broad, covering polymers for the textile industry, coatings, resins, wood-derived chemicals, plant extracts, etc. One of the most vital challenges to further expand bio-based industry is the implementation of bio-refining, which is presently lacking. Establishing a local bio-refining capacity would drastically promote the advancement of emerging biobased initiatives/commercialization.
Slovenia participates in the BioINSouth consortium with the Association of Chemical Industries of Slovenia.
